As I mentioned in a previous blog post, we are now traveling down the River Trent.
As luck would have it, we are going with the current.
Normally, we are lucky to make two or three miles an hour.
On the Trent, traveling with the river, we can travel about 4 miles per hour with our engine. And, since we have so much more space to maneuver in and so few locks and other obstacles we can actually cover four miles in an hour.
Plus, the river current helps us out at the rate of about 2 miles an hour.
The result, we now go screaming down the river at 6 Miles Per Hour! The shore line is literally whizzing by. It makes a girl giddy. ;-)
The other great thing, the locks along the river are also used by commercial traffic. Hence, they are opened and closed mechanically and the lock master does the work (pushes the right buttons in the right order).
These men are making my life so much easier that I am thinking of putting them on my Christmas card list. ;-0
